An 8.8 strong earthquake hit Chile on February 27, 2010, around 3:34 a.m. (1:43 a.m. ET). According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake hit 56 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles. At least 700 people were killed due to the earthquake, and more deaths were expected. About 1.5 million homes were damaged. The quake severed telephone and power lines, hindering communications with the affected area. According to local media, buildings in the historic center of Santiago were also damaged. Santiago lies 200 miles north of the epicenter. The "state of catastrophe" has been declared in the affected areas.

Building Block Damage Assessment Concepcion - Talcahuano - Hualpen area.

Disclaimer - This is a block damage assessment. It is important to consider that this damage assessment is derived from the ratio between the number of destroyed buildings and the area of each block; this product should be used in combination of the RGR-DMG-XX series.

Cosmo-SkyMed Multitemporal Coherence - Change detection analysis COSMO-SkyMed MultiTemporal Coherence over Concepcion area.

This map shows potential changes that have occurred between the acquisition dates of the COSMO-SkyMed Spotlight-2 images (28.02.2010 - 08.03.2010). Such potential changes have been faced with optical VHR pre-post earthquake images.

In MTC map, green elements detects areas where the coherence is low and the backscattering value is significantly higher in the post image rather than in the pre image. Viceversa, red areas detects areas where the coherence is low and the backscattering value is significantly higher in the pre image rather than in the post image. Red and green areas are areas where a change could have happened, in the urban areas maybe caused by the earthquake. Blue elements are areas where the coherence between the two images is high and therefore should not have changed that much.

- Red: Pre-event SAR detected amplitude (28.02.2010)
- Green: Post-event SAR detected amplitude (08.03.2010)
- Blue: Interferometric coherence (28.02.2010 - 08.03.2010)

2. Potential Helicopter Landing Area

This potential Helicopter Landing Areas have been extracted using pre-event imagery, estimating the most likely damages in case of an earthquake, and selecting the locations less likely to suffer damages, or close to structures or other potentially hazardous locations. This layer of information has not been contrasted against post event imagery. To be used with care
